Congratulations on your engagement. You asked a very good question. Yes, there is a difference between an emcee and a dj however, in terms of weddings, most DJs in CT do both. The master of ceremonies or MC, handles your timeline for your wedding. They are the keeper of the keys so to speak when it comes to letting your guests and vendor team when certain things are happening. A good example of this would be when your parents dances occur, your MC will be rounding up the other vendors to make sure that there is a photographer available to capture it. He’ll also let the event coordinator or venue manager know when this is happening to allow them to prepare for their next task. Your emcee is both a coach and an advocate to help you get the most out of your wedding.

Now, for the second question. Is it important if the DJ plays great music? YES! Absolutely yes. Because a wedding without the right music is just a fancy dinner. A wedding is a celebration. And what not a better way to celebrate than to hit the dancefloor with a hundred of your closest family and friends. A great dj will listen to your requests and blend them in with crowd favorites sure to keep guests entertained from first dance until it’s time to go.

You’re a thrifty shopper. You look at those reward points after leaving the grocery store and smile with pride because you know you just saved a ton of money by buying that extra value pack of toilet paper. Nicely done!

But when you’re shopping around for DJ services or ANY services for that matter, you’ve got to get down to where the rubber meets the road to really see if all things are equal. In a DJ forum tonight, someone asked the question, “DO you give people a price sheet at your meetings for when they leave?” That’s a good question. Shopping and bargain hunting is what we as humans are programmed to do. In most cases, it’s a great ideology for things like shopping for home heating oil, electricity and canned goods.  Those are common commodities that have very little variation from one to the next. But when it comes to something as specific as wedding djs, they are miles apart in preference. In the end, the value is in the eye of the beholder.

So Aaron, if you’re telling me that bidding to get the best price DJ services isn’t the right way to find my dj, what does that mean?
There’s a few things to consider when you’re looking for the right person for the job. With what we offer, it’s a personality based service. Just like your favorite actors, musicians, comedians, etc. One person’s Lewis Black might be another person’s Louis CK. And even though these two comedians are often lumped together for their raw and edgy performances, they are in fact 2 different people with 2 different offerings. The same can be said for DJs.

But beyond personality types, what else should you look for when the sticker shock sets in? You need to look at experience. If when you ask questions during a meeting, the person you’re speaking with has all of the right answers, chances are they’re a good fit. If they answer questions you didn’t know you had or addressed concerns before they were considered, they are most DEFINITELY a good fit. There are other things to consider as well. Things like service offerings. If you are looking for a wedding dj in ct as well as a ceremony sound system and intelligent lighting for your celebration, chances are, it’s going to run you somewhere in the neighborhood of $1900-2500 respectively. But if you’re meeting with a DJ who is willing to give away the farm for $650 and claims they can deliver the same experience as the $2500 DJ with a proven track record, you should be suspect of them.

Think of your wedding dj as an investment in an asset. Your home for example. Would you want to put peel and stick tile that is susceptible to peeling and cracking within 5 years in your kitchen, or would you rather have ceramic or marble tile installed that will last decades? Buy it once and never worry about it again. The same can be said for your wedding dj. Choose the best option and you should be worry free for your wedding day or roll the dice and hope for the best. The choice is yours.

Music. It’s the life blood of any party. It makes you laugh or cry. It makes you dance or sing. Each song carries purpose and had a time and a place. Weddings are a melting pot of ages, personalities, music preferences, and dancing styles. Your grandparents may have cut a rug back in the day with some Glenn Miller. Your folks may have rocked out to The Doors or grooved to the Temptations. And if you’re in your 30’s, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears were the soundtrack of your youth.

With every genre and every album ever made, not every single is a winner on the dancefloor. Nobody wants to hear bad song requests at your wedding. So where do people draw inspiration from to dance? It’s gotta have a hook, a memorable melody, and a bassline that just makes you want to tap your feet. If you are an avid indie rock fan, chances are, your tastes differ very much from the mainstream music scene. But worry not, there’s hope for your genre yet. Indie music is excellent for things like cocktail hour and dinner because it’s great for listening. It might be a bit folky for the dancefloor but it has it’s time and place.

But what if you’re not into top 40 music? Consider this. If you’re inviting 150 of your friends and family, they are going to want to dance. And the more smiles you see the day of your wedding, the better. People will dance to what is familiar. Your DJ might toss in some classics for good measure that guests young and old will remember. Timeless music that you grew up listening to in dad’s truck or mom’s van on the way to soccer.

Those are great opportunities to fill the dancefloor as it appeals to the masses. But there is always one guest who likes to test the waters musically. He’s the guy that you warned us about. The one you said, “If he comes up to you, DO NOT PLAY HIS SONG!” You know your guests better than anyone else and know their personalities just as well. Be sure to be very clear with your wedding dj on the type of environment you’re trying to create for your special day.  What works for one, might not work for another. If you’re looking for a knock down drag out dance party, top 40 is your go to for crowd pleasers and upbeat tunes. If you’re a rocker, the 80’s and early 90’s are a great place to be. Likewise, we want to make sure that we aren’t playing any songs that might stir up bad memories or are inappropriate.

As a new bride, there are a lot of planning details that need to be worked out before you walk down the aisle. When deciding to get your makeup and hair professionally styled, a pretrial is a must have. Pictures on Pinterest or The Knot might inspire you for a certain look, but trying out these ideas ahead of time will insure you look exactly the way that’s right for you. Can you imagine trying on a wedding dress the day of your wedding without slipping it on ahead of time! Hair and makeup are no different!

Doing a pretrial also lets you live in the look, allowing you to see how long the makeup wears throughout the day. We recommend booking your pretrial on a day that you are going out and if possible dance the night away as you would on your wedding night. When you visit us for your pretrial expect to spend at least an hour with us so we can go over all the details of your big day such as colors, themes and dress style so we can create a perfect look to capture your vision. Once we have applied your make up and styled your hair to your loving we will then have records of all the details. We also go over our arrival time and location to insure all of the details are settled before the big day. If after your make up and hair is done and you decide on a tweak or two, we encourage you to reach out to let us know before the actual day. We want to make sure your day is a stress free as possible! It’s better to make these decisions ahead of time so changes and adjustments can be make with no surprises.

Taking the time to meet your stylists is a great way to talk more about the schedule of your wedding and also to determine the logistics surrounding your bridal party and others that may also be getting services done. A prepared bride is a happy bride!

Booking your pretrial well in advance makes the most sense as the season fills up quickly and popular dates are reserved on a first come basis. On the day of the pretrial, we recommend that you come with your face freshly cleansed, toned and moisturized to make sure the PH balance of your skin is at its best. Please wear something white or as close to the color of your gown as possible. Bring your inspiration pictures and we can go through and see what looks and colors will match up with your features the best. Feel free to bring any swatches as well.
