Streaming music at an event
Lots of DJs are moving to a “streaming only” music library which is scary to me.
The liability of being reliant on internet access is too great. Owning your music and files and keeping redundant libraries is what keeps you safe during an event. Streaming music at an event is risky at best.
If a drive fails, grab another identical drive and keep going. (same goes for laptops) and the show goes on. If the venue’s internet loses connectivity, you’re waiting until their ISP can fix the issue.
If you’re on a “guest” network at the venue, the possibility of HUNDREDS of guests connecting to the network is a possibility thus slowing down your access to music and causing stress for you and potentially pausing the event that you’re working.
What about tethering to your phone?
Of course, you can do that. BUT, if cell service is minimal or non-existent, you run into the same problem. Cell towers, much like routers, have only so much capacity. If there are 20,000 users in the area streaming Netflix on their phone, and you’re downloading at an event, you may not get the speed you need to get your music.
I’m far from afraid of technology because it helps us a lot with what we do. But, investing in redundant systems and backups, and always being prepared is what is going to set you apart from the folks that don’t have that in mind.
More than just mixes, technical acumen, lighting, and announcements….. we offer peace of mind that the end result will have a positive outcome every time.
